ANGIOPLASTY
AT HOSPITAL
Angioplasty is the minimally invasive method by which blood flow is restored in a vessel.
The main application of the method is in the coronary vessels of the heart, commonly known as the “balloon”.
A catheter (thin flexible tube) is inserted from the root of the thigh, which is directed under fluoroscopic control, into the coronary vessel showing the thrombosis.
When the tip of the catheter is inside the narrowed part of the vessel, the interventional cardiologist inflates a balloon, which corrects the problem.
A metal “stent” element is often placed which, after being expanded with the balloon, remains expanded in place.
The catheter is removed and the operation is complete.
