Let’s Discover Ladadika Thessaloniki
Like Ano Poli, Ladadika is one of the few neighborhoods that survived the Great Fire of 1917.
Its name reflects its past use: it was an area with wholesale shops selling olive oil and other products like olives, wine, spices, sugar, and colonial goods (“ladi” in Greek means oil).
Its proximity to the port boosted the district’s commercial role during the Ottoman period. It was known as the “Egyptian Market” due to the exotic imports it hosted.
After the fire and the 1978 earthquake, the area declined until 1985 when it was declared a preserved historical district by the Ministry of Culture. It features distinct 19th-century architecture, neoclassical buildings, cobbled streets, and small squares — perfect for walking and photography.
From the 1990s onward, the area was revitalized: old warehouses were turned into restaurants, cafés, bars, taverns, and nightlife spots, making it the liveliest part of the city.
